ÒDENA-YGLESIAS TEMPLE MAUSOLEUM

Commissioned by Pere Òdena, owner of the Vapor Vell silk factory, from the Barcelona-based architect Jaume Brossa Mascaró in 1872. Originally designed in a Neo-Egyptian style, the mausoleum was initially meant to resemble a mastaba, a type of rectangular, solid Egyptian tomb. However, the final design deviated from this concept, incorporating a cross to symbolise Christianity triumphing over the pagan world, represented by the temple below.

THE FUNERARY STELE OF EVARIST FÀBREGAS

This piece is another example of Romantic design: the Funerary Stele at the tomb of the Reus-born philanthropist Evarist Fàbregas i Pàmies. Created in 1960 by local sculptor Joan Rebull, the stele presents a purely symbolic iconography—a female figure kneeling, offering a laurel wreath to the deceased, symbolizing the triumph of the spirit.

Evarist Fàbregas i Pàmies (Reus, 1868 – Barcelona, 1938) was a businessman, politician, and philanthropist, and served as president of the Centre de Lectura from 1905 to 1908. He was also one of its greatest benefactors.

BOULE PANTHEON

This pantheon is another example of non-religious iconography. The stele at the head of the tomb was created by Reus-born sculptor Joan Rebull, depicting an allegory of triumph with a kneeling woman offering a laurel wreath to the deceased. This funerary monument is one of the earliest in the cemetery and follows a Neo-Gothic style. Commissioned by the Boule family, one of the most prominent dynasties in Reus during the late 19th century, the pantheon is currently undergoing restoration.

CHRONOS

The sculpture represents the god Chronos and is notable for holding in his hands the attributes symbolizing the passage of time and death: the hourglass and the scythe. For this reason, the figure is popularly known as the Peret de la Dalla. The statue was created based on a model designed by the sculptor Roig i Soler. Initially, it adorned the main façade at the entrance to the cemetery, signifying the non-confessional nature of the site. In 1939, following the victory of Franco’s forces, Cronos was removed and replaced with a cross.

PANTHEON OF GENERAL PRIM

Joan Prim i Prats (Reus, 1814 – Madrid, 1870), Count of Reus, Viscount of Bruc, and Marquis of Los Castillejos, was a prominent military leader and politician who had a major influence on 19th-century Spanish politics. Among his many positions, he served as the military governor of Barcelona, a deputy in the Spanish Parliament, and President of the Council of Ministers. As a military figure, he distinguished himself in the War of Africa (1860) and as the commander of Spanish forces in Mexico (1862).

MAUSOLEUM OF JOAN PRIM I PRATS

Joan Prim i Prats (Reus, 1814 - Madrid, 1870) was Count of Reus, Viscount of Bruc, and Marquis of Los Castillejos. He was a military leader and politician who wielded significant influence in 19th-century Spanish politics. Among other positions, he served as military governor of Barcelona, a member of the Spanish Cortes, and president of the Council of Ministers. He distinguished himself as a military leader during the African War (1860) and as the commander of Spanish forces in Mexico (1862).

TOMB OF JOSEP TAPIRÓ I BARÓ

In the 19th century, the city of Tangier became a source of inspiration for artists seeking to depict an exotic Oriental world. Most of them merely passed through its streets, and in nearly all cases, their works reflected a superficial image that reproduced the typical clichés of the Orientalist genre. Josep Tapiró (Reus, 1836 – Tangier, 1913), on the other hand, developed a deep commitment to this reality. In 1877, after living in Rome for fifteen years and establishing himself as a watercolourist, he settled in the heart of the Tangier medina, setting up his studio there.

GRAVE OF CIPRIANO MARTOS

Cipriano Martos Jiménez (Huétor-Tájar, 1942 - Reus, 1973) was a Spanish worker and trade unionist of Andalusian origin. In search of work, he moved first to Morón de la Frontera, then to Teruel, Sabadell, Terrassa, and finally Reus, where he took on various jobs as a day labourer, miner, textile worker, and eventually a bricklayer. He was a member of the FRAP (Revolutionary Anti-Fascist Popular Front) and, just before turning 31, was arrested by the Civil Guard at work, accused of distributing propaganda and making some graffiti in Igualada.

GRAVE OF SALVADOR VILASECA

Salvador Vilaseca i Anguera was born into a craftsman family in Reus, a city to which he maintained a strong connection throughout his life. As a young man, he became a prominent member of the Reus Excursionist Association and developed a keen interest in geology and natural sciences, subjects he began studying in Madrid. Between 1915 and 1923, he published several works on these topics. During this time, he was also active in the Nationalist Youth of Reus (1918). In 1915, he co-founded the Reus Excursionist Association with Jaume Sabater and Ricard Ferrater.

TOMB OF ANTONI PEDROL RIUS

Antoni Pedrol Rius was born in Reus in 1910 and passed away in Madrid in 1992. He was a lawyer, jurist, and State Counselor.

Pedrol was born in Reus, the same city as General Prim. He wrote a remarkable book titled The Assassins of General Prim, which delves into the assassination of Joan Prim in 1873 and explores the historical shift that occurred with his death, filled with unpublished data and insightful contributions.
