TOMB OF ASHES

The General Cemetery of Reus has established two spaces in response to requests from citizens seeking alternative locations for the ashes of their deceased family members or friends. These include the Fountain of Ashes, where ashes can be scattered, and a nearby columbarium. Both areas are in the northern extension of the cemetery, close to the central pathway.

PLAQUE OF THE CEMETERY OF ROSER

In 1902, this burial site was reserved for the remains from the old Cemetery of Roser, where new burials had ceased since 1871. However, the transfer process began in 1897 and was not completed until 1919, involving the mass relocation of all remaining remains. This effort helped to clean up the area surrounding the Roser hermitage and restored it to its intended use.

TOMB OF THE HONORABLE MR. JOSEP LAPORTE SALAS

Graduating in 1945, he became a professor of pharmacology at the medical faculties of Cádiz, Valencia, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where he also served as rector from 1976 to 1980. He held the presidency of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands from 1970 to 1974, as well as the eleventh Congress of Doctors and Biologists of the Catalan Language held in Reus in 1980. Additionally, he presided over the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia and the Board of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau from 1993 to 2002.

CIVIL WAR MASS GRAVE

In this space rest the remains of various citizens of Reus and others who, during the three tragic years of the Civil War, lost their lives in our city. Specifically, this mass grave is the final resting place for victims whose bodies were left unclaimed during the war. In the centre of the row that marks the boundary of the grave, there is a commemorative plaque in honour of Lluís Companys, who was President of the Generalitat and was executed shortly after the end of the war.

PORTICOED ENTRANCE

Josep Sardà i Cailà, the lawyer and liberal politician from Reus who, with part of his legacy, made the construction project possible, explained that "he had felt great disappointment at having to bury his brother in the old Cemetery of Roser... a small and poor cemetery where there was barely enough space for the entire funeral procession. It was a small and sad square with simple graves, no mausoleums, no statues, no chapels, no trees, and no flowers. That day, I decided to begin my final work for the city of Reus. I would make sure there was no distinction among the dead."

CHRONOS

The sculpture represents the god Chronos and is notable for holding in his hands the attributes symbolizing the passage of time and death: the hourglass and the scythe. For this reason, the figure is popularly known as the Peret de la Dalla. The statue was created based on a model designed by the sculptor Roig i Soler. Initially, it adorned the main façade at the entrance to the cemetery, signifying the non-confessional nature of the site. In 1939, following the victory of Franco’s forces, Cronos was removed and replaced with a cross.
