CHAPEL OF THE MOST HONOURABLE HERIBERT BARRERA

Heribert Barrera i Costa was born in Barcelona on July 6, 1917. His father, Martí Barrera, was a deputy in the Parliament and a member of the Generalitat of Catalonia. During the Civil War, he served as an artillery soldier on the fronts of Aragón and the Segre. He exiled to France in 1939 and remained there until 1952.

TOMB OF MARIA CORTINA

Maria Cortina studied at the high school in Reus and also learned Fine Arts at the Fortuny Academy under Ramon Casals i Vernis. She later pursued teacher training at the Normal School in Barcelona, obtaining her diploma in 1897. In 1899, she opened her first school in a flat on Raval de Santa Anna, number 45. As her reputation grew, student enrollment increased, prompting her to move to number 34 on the same street shortly thereafter. By 1912, she relocated to Raval Martí Folguera, 8 (then known as Raval Baix de Jesús), occupying two floors.

HISTORICAL GRAVES

The General Cemetery preserves some of the original trench burial sites used in its early years. Over time, other graves have been gradually relocated to make way for new sections of niches. This area contains the remains of individuals who, either by personal choice or due to limited financial resources, were buried in shallow graves.

BURIAL OF DR. FRIAS ROIG'S FAMILY

Dr. Alexandre Frias i Roig was born in Reus, at number 19 of the current Raval de Martí i Folguera, on 20 August 1878. Orphaned of his mother, Maria Roig, at the age of seven and of his father, Isidor Frias, at twelve, Alexandre had to study while working.

CHAPEL OF THE HEROES OF MORELL AND VILALLONGA

This chapel was built in memory of the 132 liberal militia members from Reus who lost their lives in 1838 during a confrontation with Carlist militias in the municipalities of Morell and Vilallonga. Inside the chapel, the names of these militiamen are inscribed.

CHAPEL OF THE VICTIMS OF THE CIVIL WAR BOMBING

On 18 September 1937, the Reus City Council established a special burial site for the families of victims of the aerial bombardment by Franco's army. The day before, the city had been in shock as it experienced what was then the most tragic day of the Civil War, with attacks that swept across the city, resulting in a significant number of casualties.

Throughout the remainder of the war, this site became the resting place for a substantial portion of the 214 documented victims of the conflict.

PLAQUE OF THE FIRST BURIAL

Established in the second half of the 19th century, the General Cemetery of Reus was inaugurated in 1870. This site marks the location of the first burial, which took place on 2 January 1871.

MAUSOLEUM OF THE ILLUSTRIOUS SONS / MACIÀ VILA FAMILY

This mausoleum is currently used to honour those distinguished with the title of Illustrious Sons of the City of Reus. As such, you will notice a plaque with the city’s coat of arms engraved on one of its sides.

Initially, it was constructed for the Vila family: Maria Barberà, the widow of the industrialist and banker Macià Vila. The mausoleum was designed by the architect Leandro Albareda.

MONUMENT TO JOSEP SARDÀ I CAILÀ

At the central crossroads between the first and second sections of the General Cemetery of Reus stands the Monument to Josep Sardà i Cailà. Sardà i Cailà, a lawyer and politician from Reus, dedicated a significant portion of his estate to the construction of this cemetery. The monument, created in the late 19th century in an eclectic style, has a stone base that resembles an altar (though it isn’t one), with a square foundation.
